Afternoon snack? Put it down

Published: Mon, 01/11/16

Today has been my first proper day back in the office since I got back from Nepal.

There's a chance I've done as many steps today as I did on the trek; I'm not including walking the dogs in that.

I literally haven't stopped going up and down the stairs in search of a snack.  fortunately, we haven't got anything in.  Fran finished of most of the goodies while I was away and the last pack of crisps we had, got eaten last night ready to start our 'diet' today ;)

It hasn't stopped me going back down the stairs to check though.

I'm not particularly hungry, in fact I'm not hungry at all.

I'm looking for a distraction, kind of like boredom eating but I'm not bored.

How often do you have snacks at work because of habit or boredom?

Do you actually need the nutrients or energy from that snack?

If you have a decent breakfast and lunch, you don't really require any snacks; particularly if you are not active at work.

When I was trekking, I had a good breakfast and lunch most days.  I only really noticed at the end of the trek that I didn't eat most of the snacks and treats I took with me.  I was pretty active most days, walking between 5 and 10 miles at altitude, I just didn't need to snack.

I don't need the extra energy and I didn't need the distraction; the scenery covered that aspect.

If you are hungry, by all means have a snack but choose something that will nourish you rather than put you back a few steps.

A piece of fruit and a few nuts.

Some hummus and crudités.

A greens drink would be a good option.

Being dehydrated can often confuse your brain in to snacking rather than drinking.  Water is the best bet but when it's cold I'll always go for a herbal tea.

I didn't go too crazy on the coffee in Nepal so it's the first time I've started our nutrition plan without those horrid headaches associated with caffeine withdrawal.

What are your favourite snack options for work?  Let me know, they don't have to be 'healthy'.
