I’ve had a few conversations this week about supplements for health and performance. It must be marketing budget time as social media is full of new claims for loads of sciency sounding things that will fix all of your problems.
Supplements can be useful for some people in certain situations, however, they should supplement, not be used to make up for poor
choices.
I listened to a great podcast this week with Layne Norton, a nutrition scientist among many things, explain that taking supplements is like looking at a blade of grass but ignoring the state of the rest of the field.
There are a few supplements that I feel are worth considering when you have the basics right and even as a little top up.
What are the basics?
Getting good quality
sleep.
Being Hydrated.
Doing something physical most days at a level where you are at least slightly breathless.
Pick up heavy, for you, things two or three times per week.
Eat a decent amount of protein.
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
The cherry on top of that would be doing some breath work and work on mindset.
Consistently, doing those things will take care of most of our health related issues. Then it might be worth looking at some supplements that help improve performance.
I’ll put together a list of the things that could be part of the basics from a supplement / top up point of view for tomorrow.
