One of the joys of social media is the memories section.
Over the past few days, mine have been showing photos from a triathlon I did a couple of times in Scotland. It was a long distance one; 2.4 mile swim in the Firth of Forth, 110 mile bike ride from Edinburgh to Glen Coe, finished with a 27 mile run the last 8 miles being Ben Nevis.
June back then seemed to be a month for long distance events, as we also did both the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the National Three Peaks hikes.
Comparison is often called the thief of joy in coaching circles. Encouraging people not to compare themselves to the highlight reels of others or their past selves.
I’ve looked at the photos and I’m using comparison as a source of inspiration. Looking at the smiles on the faces of
the people who joined us or supported us on events, reminded me of how much positivity we’ve added to the world and given others a joy / appreciation of the outdoors and their own physicality.
And ultimately, that’s why Fran and I still work in the health and fitness world, just from a slightly different angle.
There’s no reason as we get older that we can’t do the things we have in the past if you really wanted to. It’s just that our
priorities change and our focus is placed in different areas.
However, as we get a little older, it is necessary to to put a priority on our health so we can continue to appreciate the outdoors and do the things we want to do.
If you want some guidance on which aspects to concentrate on to suit your goals, let us know.
