5 reasons I don't think you should go on a diet

Yesterday I wrote about how there is going to be an onslaught of fads and fake science in the media regarding weight loss and fitness over the next couple of weeks - http://coventrypersonaltrainer.co.uk/968/2015-transformation-challenge/

Shortly after I sent it out one of my mentors, Phil Richards, posted the following on Facebook which summed up my exact sentiments.

Why Diets Don’t Work Long Term

There are 5 main problems with many of the popular diet plans which millions of people follow worldwide and why they fail to lose weight safely, effectively and for the long term.

1) They are concerned with reducing weight rather than the correct approach of losing body fat. Don't get caught up with what the weighing scale says be more concerned with your body fat %. For example you can have to 70 kg women both 5 foot 6 but one has a body fat % of 12% and the other 27% therefore one is lean and one is obese regardless of what the weighing scales say!

2) They strip off vital muscle which is the major component that burns the fat in the first place. Nutrition scientists have known for decades that low calorie diets of 800 – 1200 calories per day can use up to 45% of muscle tissue for energy, this can drop your metabolic rate by as much as 40% and is a disaster long for term fat loss. Remember fat burns in the furnace of muscle and muscle is 15 - 20 times more metabolically active than fat. You must preserve your muscle at all costs! So any intelligent weight loss program must involve a program which stimulates muscle growth!

3) They take off weight too fast, thereby throwing the body into a defensive, fat preserving condition. This literally causes hormonal chaos putting you in fat storage mode instead of fat burning mode.

4) Low calorie diets will release toxins which have been stored in body fat into he blood stream which can decrease our fat burning hormones and inhibit our energy factories called mitochondria from burning fat efficiently.

5) For those who attend slimming clubs you must remember that the advice given to you is designed for you to become a repeat customer, you will drop weight initially on a low calorie diet but you will be back when the tide comes back in:) Also the people who run slimming clubs have virtually ZERO knowledge on how the body effectively loses body fat without the rebound. For every success story at slimming clubs there are hundreds who fail repeatedly!

So remember, the true purpose of weight reduction is to dispose of excess body fat while retaining lean muscle tissue. This is why many of the diet programs, run by the plethora of slimming clubs, fail - they reduce weight but also muscle. Like a boomerang, that weight is certain to come back on. This, though, is a great business model for the slimming clubs as you always get repeat business.

This is why we focus on building the health and strength of our Team Achieve members rather than simply focusing on weight loss.

On Sunday 4th January 2015, we will be doing a meet the coaches session in Coventry where our members will have the opportunity to have their circumference measurements taken.  That way we will be able to see exactly what is happening with their body.

We have also invested in some medical grade scales for those that which to know what is happening on the scales accurately.
