I've just caught the end of a news feature on radio 2 about fat nurses. The debate bit got quite heated, often arguing with 'how can I take health advice from somebody who clearly doesn't value their health at all?'
I can sort of see where they are coming from, confidence isn't high when looking at a GP or nurse who looks unwell. However, everybody is fighting their own battle.
I've told you about mine many times. Just because somebody isn't in the right
frame of mind to follow some advice at the moment, doesn't mean that the advice they are giving isn't important.
One of the callers classed obese people as body vandals, responsible for vandalising their own body. Labelling around fat and obesity is a contentious issue.
Is it ok to call somebody fat? Not if it doesn't serve a constructive purpose other than being hurtful.
Is it ok to call somebody skinny? Again, not if it doesn't serve a constructive purpose other than being hurtful.
We are adults who have the ability to communicate without insults, yet often revert back to playground name calling. A person should not be defined by their body fat in the same way that they shouldn't be defined by their colour or religion.
Yes, I know you have
more control over how your body looks than your race but that doesn't make it easy to do on a consistent basis.
Obesity being diagnosed as a disability was thrown in to the mix. I personally don't think this will help things, it will merely stigmatise a proportion of the population. However, I believe that the advice around weight loss given by the government is
clearly not working, nor is the advice given by most fitness people.
We need a different approach on a massive scale to truly tackle the epidemic we are suffering with as a culture. Something similar to The Real Food Plan; education about food and how everybody is different in their needs rather than the blanket approach.
The eating healthier argument was also thrown in. That's just bollocks. Healthy food isn't expensive it just requires a little more effort and if we can't put effort in to eating well and fulling our bodies everything else will and does suffer.
