Something that I've always wondered as we walk down the canal with our dogs is; if so many of the people we train and advise on nutrition have an issue with bread / gluten, do ducks get bloated?
I don't think ducks have access to little fowl bakeries on the river bank by beavers and squirrels when humans aren't around to feed them. So it makes sense that
bread isn't a natural part of their diet and would potentially cause them digestive issues.
It's only relatively recently that humans would have had left over bread and other food waste, so it's been part of the ducks diet for less time than ours.
The Canal & River Trust have just answered my question with their recent campaign to stop giving ducks junk food / bread and start feeding them fruit, vegetables and some grains. You can read
about it here - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/11471281/Feed-the-ducks-with-frozen-peas-not-bread-says-Canal-and-River-Trust.html
It makes sense to me in the same way it does with humans.
I'm not going to go on a celebrity rant that you need to avoid bread or gluten for the rest of your life. However, if you have digestive issues following bread or pasta, it may be time to give your system a rest for a few weeks and
see what happens.
We do this with our Team Achieve members and gradually re-introduce known 'problem' foods to see what happens. That way we can advise on an individual basis rather than the one diet must fit all people approach favoured by many.
Our next Achieve Bootcamps start in 2 weeks, if you would like a little help with what food to eat or know somebody that does, get them to complete our application form at
