Exercise won't help you lose weight

Published: Thu, 04/23/15

A study was published yesterday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine that states 'physical activity does not promote weight loss.'

You can read the full study here - http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2015/04/21/bjsports-2015-094911.full

I'm expecting lots of reports in the media over the next couple of days about how exercise doesn't help with weight loss so to not bother and just follow some crazy fad diet that their advertisers are pushing.

Now as a trainer and coach, you might be expecting me to disagree with the report and try and convince you that exercise is brilliant for weight loss.

However, I'd be lying.  There are much more important factors to get right first before adding exercise in to the mix.

1.  Addressing the quality of the food that you eat.
2.  Ensuring that you manage stress well.
3.  Ensuring you get enough good quality sleep.
4.  Reducing the amount of chemicals you introduce to your body.

Those would be a good start.  We cover them with our Team Achieve members.  Obviously, we promote exercise too.

It is part of what we do, it is just a part of the reason our members get such good results.

Unfortunately, the study will be reported in a way that will make people believe that exercise or activity is not important.  They couldn't be further from the truth.

Exercise might not be high on the list if weight loss is your primary goal.  It is high on the list though if health is a goal and BIG HINT - health should be your primary goal for long term results.

I'll write more tomorrow about the reasons why you should exercise.

P.S. If you have emailed me over the past couple of days I will get back to you tomorrow.  I've had a couple of full days in my treatment room with injury clients and haven't had chance to sit down in the office.
