10,000 hours

Published: Wed, 06/24/15

This morning as I sat in traffic on the A46 (it happens a lot) I was listening to Chris Evans and he interviewed Matthew Syed, the Author of Bounce.

He was talking about his theory on the 10,000 hour rule.  That is, that anybody can master a skill if they perform purposeful practice of that skill for 10,000 hours.

He was an Olympic level Table Tennis player and at that time about 50% of the UK's best players came from his street.  Not by any genetic mishap but due to the fact that they had a passion for table tennis, a great coach and a passion to be better.

It was the passion that he focussed on.  Without a passion for what he was doing he wouldn't have ever put the 10,000 hours in.

We see the same happen when new members join us who have tried EVERY diet on the planet and 'failed'.  They were following a diet or plan that they didn't enjoy and just wanted it to end.  Our plan focuses on all of the great foods you can enjoy and re-ignite a passion for food that most diets destroy.

Why would you want to follow a plan that makes you eat tasteless boring foods with the texture of cardboard?  Meal times are difficult enough as it is without being bored with the contents on your plate.

I agree in the message that Matthew was saying.  Everybody has the power to be great, they just need to practise with purpose and find the thing they want to be great at.

Bruce Lee once said that 'I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times'.

Everybody has the right to be what they want to be and enjoy life to the full.

'I don't have the time' or 'I don't know how' I hear you say.

We live in an information age, knowledge is now freely available on any subject.

Time is increasingly scarce but managing that time can free up space to learn about a subject.  Fran listens to podcasts on health and nutrition when she's doing chores.  I listen to audiobooks when I'm out running, a friend listens to them in the car and calls it a driving university.

If you've never listened to an audiobook before give it a go, Audible are doing a free 30 day trial at the minute.  They do fiction too not just boring work books :)
