Recovery

One of the most common questions I had over the past week was about how long it takes to recover from an Ironman.

It varies is the answer.

I started feeling pretty normal again by Wednesday from a moving around in general kind of way.  I put that largely down to nutrition and hydration.

Straight after the event, I pretty much started eating and it felt like I didn't stop for 48 hours.  Predominantly, good quality nutritious foods to support recovery but I'd be lying if I didn't tell you there were also lots of things to just get some calories in.

Strangely for me, I didn't go for sweet or sugary foods or treats.  Doing a long distance event you get a bit bored of the sweetness of jelly babies etc.

The one thing that I always do after the long events though is really up the amount of greens I drink.  I think I probably average about 6 or 7 scoops and find it really helps getting me back on track.  Simply flushing my system with nutrients.

That's one of the reasons we recommend greens drinks to our members.

From a performance point of view, I had a little swim, ride and run towards the end of last week.

The swim felt pretty normal, I just took my time and only did one lap of the lake as more of a chill out session rather than trying to push it.

I knew my legs were fatigued when I ran and got on the bike.  A slight incline had me much more breathless than it should have and my legs were burning quite a bit.

From experience, I know that my legs won't really be performing at 100% for another couple of weeks.

I also started my new programme yesterday with Sam which has more emphasis one strength and conditioning than being able to ride or run so far.  As a result my body is not thanking me this morning :)

That method works much better for me as a fat loss method, so I'll be sticking to it for the summer.

It is a slightly modified version of what we do with our bootcamp members.

Sleep also plays a major part in recovery, not just from extreme events but every day life.  Unfortunately, it is the area everybody neglects.

We've written about it lots in the past and will be updating again soon.
